  The Collegium is a private, play-by-email roleplaying game. It is set in Mercedes Lackey's world of Velgarth. Since the world (and the country of Valdemar, the terms "Herald" and "Companion", and various other terms used in the game) are all copyrighted to Mercedes Lackey and DAW Books, the moderators of this game take the concept of copyright infringement very seriously. We operate based on the concept of "fair use," a concept clarified by Mercedes Lackey herself -- "You can play private RPGs to your heart's content; it's all fine as long as you don't publish anything." Because The Collegium is run completely via the Internet and based solely on entirely free mailing list and Web hosts, no money is ever exchanged in its upkeep. While these services do contain advertising banners such as the one at the top of this page, we feel that this is acceptable, as evidenced by the precedent set by every other fan page on the Internet using a banner-driven host. Moreover, we attempt to follow copyright law in spirit as well as by letter -- all characters created for the game are original, and no use of any of Mercedes Lackey's characters is permitted by the players save for limited dealings with some minor characters when such contact is necessary for plot flow.
