Usually hidden behind a forest green cloak and hood, Rylarc is a change child, cross
between human and wolf. He stands about 5'8", and weights about 175 lbs. The
only part of the change recognizable in his face is the gold eyes, and slightly pronounced
canines. From behind, its obvious to tell how the change affected him: pointed ears
coated with silver hair, a silver furred mane that covers his entire back, ending
with a long wolf's tail, legs more muscular and curved slightly like an animals.
From the forearms down, his skin is covered with the thick silver fur, hands more
curved, with his fingers ending with claws (normally hidden by gloves). His voice
is deep, remaining unaffected by his transformation. Raised as lower nobility, he
holds himself with an aire of dignity, bordering arrogance at times. Held as an outcast
by most, Rylarc often stays clear of large crowds. In a display of temper, he has
a chance of going feral, and is unpredictable in nature.
History/Background:
The first son of current holding lord, Deyric Kavensdale, Rylarc was trained and
prepared to take his place as the head of the Zalmon holding, in the western most
regions of Valdemar. Given the best of what his status could award him with, the
youth was well educated, both mentally and physically, in word and in sword. Easily
taking to the blade, the Armsmaster of Zalmon holding recognized Rylarc as sword
born, and gave him the special attention he needed when it came to training. Surpassing
weapon trained teens before he was age ten, the young heir quickly became the pride
of the keep, and especially that of his parents. Wielding twin short swords at nearly
every encounter, his speed and talent made him an exceptional fighter. Living a life
that seemed impervious to misfortune, Rylarc's luck changed at age eleven. Part of
a hunting party targeting a large wolf that had been stalking the outer keep grounds,
Rylarc was secretly determined to bring the beast back on his own. In hopes of proving
his skill to friends and family, Rylarc broke away from the group in mid-hunt, letting
what little he knew of tracking to guide him. Within an hour, the young heir had
cornered the beast. Though Rylarc's skills were exceptional, the wolf battled back
with an unmatched ferocity that managed to keep the boy's blades away. After a long
and tiring struggle, it seemed the youth would triumph, at least, until fate saw
to intervene in the hunt. In a circular pattern, the land around the two combatants
began to glow. Filling the area with wild magic, the circle's aura seemed to rise
to the sky before the rush of power released. With a pain filled howl and a terrified
scream, Rylarc and the wolf were caught in a transformational mage circle. Where
there were once two enemies entralled in battle, the circle left only one. From the
shock of the change, it took him weeks to heal under the constant attention of a
healer. During his treatment, Rylarc was kept hidden in a keep tower, so that only
the healer, and his parents could see the disfigurement. His stay in the tower lasted
only a year, before Deyric came to the conclusion that his son would not revert back
to his former self, and that Rylarc could never be holding lord while appearing ashe
did. Cast out in the middle of the night, Deyric disowned the boy, ordering him to
never return. Covering his embarrassment totally, he informed the family and servants
that his son had passed away, and was buried in a private ceremony. Without friends,
family, and being out on his own for the first time in his life, Rylarc struggled
to find food and shelter for months. Unable to find hospitality even from the kindest
of villagers because of his changeling appearance, he eventually turned to robbing
highways and raiding farms for survival. The discovery of his bardic gift came as
a surprise to him at age 15. Quickly becoming friends with a blind hermit named Halthic,
who resided along the Comb; Rylarc was taught the basics of the harp in exchange
for simple chores around the cabin. During one of his first practices, the old man
was quick to note the boy's gift, as it brought to life the song of sorrow in a way
that dazzled the senses. What had been just a latent possibility of a gift, the circle
had blew open, leaving Rylarc with the gift of the bards. Choosing to help the boy
understand and use the talent, Halthic sought to teach him everything he could about
the harp, with the simple tradeoff being the bard's song. Three years after their
first encounter, Halthic passed away, and Rylarc sought out the villages once again.
Using his song to bring understanding and compassion, not to mention the occasional
copper, the changling found life to be a little easier. With harp in hand, Rylarc
took to traveling, surviving by his song and singing for his supper.
